As part of the Global Partnership on Target 11 and as co-coordinators of the South Asia Regional Implementation Support Network on Aichi Target 11 -- UNDP India in collaboration with ICIMOD organized a virtual meeting on 19 October 2020 entitled, “Sharing Regional experiences on ‘Other Effective Conservation Measures’ to achieve Aichi Biodiversity Target 11”. The Network supports nine countries in the region including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The objective of this meeting was to discuss the importance of identifying, mapping, and reporting OECMs in a bid to accelerate the achievement of Aichi Target 11 quantitative and qualitative elements by end of 2020, and to share experiences on the work being undertaken on identifying OECMs in different countries and regions. The virtual meeting provided an overview of the importance of OECMs in the achievement of Target 11; shared experiences from other Regional Implementation Support Networks established under CBD Secretariat’s Global Partnership on Aichi Target 11; introduced the IUCN Guidelines on OECMs; shared experiences from India and Malaysia on identifying OECMs; and provided guidance on reporting OECMs to UNEP-WCMC World Database.
Participants included CBD national focal points of six South Asian countries, as well as representatives of donor agencies and civil society organizations, experts, and researchers working in the region who can contribute towards the achievement of Target 11 in the South Asia region.
