Edgar Kaeslin

Senior consultant for the conservation/management of wildlife, biodiversity, protected areas and nature-based tourism

Dear Madam/Sir,

After having worked many years for international, UN, governmental, research and private sector organizations such as FAO, UNDP, the Ramsar Convention Secretariat, IUCN, GIZ, ETHZ, WSL, Electrowatt Engineering Services Ltd., etc., in the conservation and/or management of wildlife, biodiversity, protected areas, wetlands, ecotourism and ecosystem health, I recently returned to Switzerland to continue working for such organizations as a senior advisor/consultant from there.

In 2014 and 2015 I supported the government of Timor-Leste in the revision of the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and the development of the 5th National Report on Biodiversity for the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). During that time I was also selected a member of the newly created UNDP Expert Roster for Support to Biodiversity Review and Planning in a competitive process.

Most recently I worked for GIZ in Bonn as advisor in the German funded programme/project “Combatting Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trade in Africa and Asia” (2015 – 2017). Implemented by GIZ it combines the expertise and resources of five German ministries, international organizations, NGOs and the private sector to combat poaching and the illegal trade in wildlife products (ivory and rhino-horn) in Africa and Asia. And prior to this I was the FAO Forestry Officer for Wildlife and Protected Area Management (2009 – 2014) where I developed and implemented a new programme on wildlife conservation and management involving various partners and stakeholders. My professional experiences include substantial policy and project work from several regions of the world. In particular, I led and contributed to the preparation and implementation of major GEF projects.

My strengths are my technical expertise and my ability to analyse situations and problems, to find innovative solutions, take decisions, guide people and to write and edit publications and reports. I am a strong networker speaking several languages, well organized, and I am passionate to conserve wildlife and help stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which people live in harmony with nature. I am fluent in German, English and French, and I have good working knowledge of Spanish and Italian.

Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in my expertise and support.
