World Parks Congress Side Event @ STREAM 5 on 18 Nov - Lunch, Play Fair Room ::: Mauritius, Seychelles and Comoros: making conservation work for development in the Indian Ocean

Resource Type:

Mauritius, Seychelles and Comoros are precious jewels in the Indian Ocean, with special approaches to the challenges of conserving their unique biodiversity heritage. Seychelles and Mauritius rate high in terms of human development and biodiversity values, while Comoros has been making steady progress towards improving people’s well-being. These three Indian Ocean countries face significant competition for both land and marine resources, while much of the economy is based on fisheries, and for Seychelles and Mauritius also on tourism and associated services. A standing partnership between the respective governments and UNDP have made impressive advances in each of the countries by addressing the inherent challenges of reconciling development with conservation. Protected areas play a pivotal role in making conservation work for development in the Indian Ocean. Each country is at a different stage of advancing this agenda and each has a story to tell about it. This side event presents through case studies the role of UNDP-GEF projects in bringing protection and sustainable use to the forefront of government planning.
