Toolkit for the Indicators of Resilience in Socio-ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes - COMDEKS

Resource Type:
Description:

The Toolkit for the Indicators of Resilience in Socio-ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes can be downloaded below. It was launched by the COMDEKS program (http://comdeksproject.com) at the World Parks Congress. The Toolkit includes an indicator related to control of wildlife poaching and illegal logging (Sustainable management of common resources).

In Namibia, the target landscape selected for COMDEKS activities is the the Ipumbu-ya Shilongo Conservancy. The area is also significant for its proximity to the Etosha National Park, a world-renowned wildlife sanctuary that is home to elephants and other African wildlife. Among the issues discussed during the resilience assessment in Namibia was a proposal to turn the southern part of the conservancy into a zone exclusively for sustainable wildlife management, including regulated big-game hunting (see Namibia case study in the Toolkit). The SGP Namibia Country Programme is currently supporting local communities in the target landscape to develop community-based actions to achieve landscape resilience. Community-based projects supported by COMDEKS will address the four landscape resilience outcomes: enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem services; strengthening the sustainability of production systems, particularly agroecosystems; developing and diversifying livelihoods and income generation; strengthening institutions and governance systems at the landscape level. Case studies in Fiji, Kenya and Turkey are also profiled.

Additional information and case studies may be found in the COMDEKS publication launched during CBD COP-12: Communities in Action for Landscape Resilience and Sustainability: The COMDEKS Programme. Access it here: http://nbsapforum.net/#read-resource/1208.
