Equator Initiative Case Study – Foundation for Partnership with Independent Farmers

Resource Type:

In collaboration with 40 villages in the northern-central district of Timor, The Foundation for Partnership with Independent Farmers aims to develop sustainable agricultural systems to increase productivity and provide alternative sources of income, with the aim of helping communities develop economic independence.
A sustainable agriculture and fair marketing initiative provides a collective marketing option for local farmers. By selling local goods together rather than independently, this collective marketing method allow villages to increase their bargaining power and increase their revenues. Fruit and lumber trees have been planted to reestablish local biodiversity and offer an alternative to deforestation. Average household incomes have increased by over 30 per cent. The Equator Initiative brings together the United Nations, governments, civil society, businesses and grassroots organizations to recognize and advance local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. As local and indigenous groups across the world chart a path towards sustainable development, the Equator Prize--issued biennially by the Equator Initiative--shines a spotlight on their efforts by honoring them on an international stage. This project was awarded the Equator Prize in recognition of its contribution to local sustainable development solutions.
