ABT 11 and its contribution to other ABTs and SDGs, Climate Change Adaptation and water, food, for the well-being of our planet

Since April 2015, The CBD secretariat indulged in many activities to facilitate achieving Target 11 inter alia development of a strategy, preparation of elaborate country dossiers, reviving PoWPA Friends and partners, organizing regional workshops to collect focused information on status, as well as draft priority actions (road map) to be undertaken by 2020, as a nationally driven process. From the draft country road maps from mainland Asia and GRULAC, it is estimated that the target 11 is closer to achievement compared to the mid-term assessment of GBO 4 presented in 2014. This estimation of progress may improve following completion of the series of workshops, covering all UN regions, and through analysis and reporting to COP 13. The analysis of the draft priority actions submitted by countries revealed that when implemented, they will not only contribute to achieve elements of y Target 11 but also: other related Aichi Biodiversity Targets (5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 1213, 14, 15, 18, 20 directly, and 1, 2, 19 indirectly); as, goods and services provided by protected areas contribute to many SDGs, implementation of road maps will provide practical means for achieving relevant targets of the SDGs (14.5, 15.1, 15.2, 15.5, 15.8 directly and 1.2, 12.2, 15.7, 15.8 indirectly);they also contribute to Climate Change adaptation and provide affect to Article 5.1 of Paris climate agreement. So concerted efforts by all in implementing the road maps is of paramount importance in the next five years. All relevant partners, including relevant government ministries, departments, GEF implementing agencies, regional organizations, bilateral and multilateral funding agencies, private sector, conservation and community organizations, should consider aligning their activities towards supporting implementation of those roadmaps as the primary framework of action and, thus, approach implementation in a concerted manner with comprehensive coordination among all.
