Private Protected Areas: Legal Framework for Pumalin Park (Chile) I IUCN

The Pumalin Park Nature Sanctuary is the first large-scale private environmental conservation project in
Chile. It covers a natural area containing fjords, glaciers and pristine forests in the Chilean Patagonia.
It began as an initiative by American entrepreneur Douglas Tompkins, who in 1994 purchased
approximately 300,000 hectares of primeval forest-covered land in Patagonia to protect the area and
use it for ecotourism.
