BIODIVERSITY AND THE SDGs—SUBMIT COMMENTS BY 31 OCTOBER 2018 ON DRAFT GUIDANCE ON MAINSTREAMING BIODIVERSITY CONSIDERATIONS IN V

Hello everyone!

As part of the follow-up and review for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, member States of the United Nations are encouraged to "conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven" (paragraph 79). These Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) are presented annually in New York under the auspices of the High-level Political Forum (HLPF). A Handbook has been prepared by the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs to assist member States in the preparation of their VNRs, and Voluntary Common Reporting Guidelines were issued by the Secretary General.

Furthermore, in June 2018, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), with financial support provided by the European Union, initiated the preparation of supplementary guidance for the integration of biodiversity considerations in VNRs. The draft biodiversity-specific guidance is organized according to the eight sections outlined in the Secretary General’s Voluntary Common Reporting Guidelines for VNRs. It provides good-practice examples taken from VNRs, prepared for the 2017 HLPF, and a number of references to relevant outputs and products prepared under the CBD. It also points to possible opportunities to use the sixth national reports under the CBD, which are due in December 2018, for the purpose of VNR reporting.

Your comments on the draft biodiversity-specific guidance for VNRs would be most appreciated. The document can be accessed at the following link: https://www.cbd.int/doc/c/acba/9ca9/c146d675d4b93fb4bbfdd910/sbi-02-inf-32-en.pdf

Please email your comments to darren.swanson.consultant@cbd.int at your earliest convenience but no later than 31 October 2018. A revised version of the biodiversity-specific guidance, including case examples from the 2018 VNRs, will be made available prior to the fourteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP-14) to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in November 2018.

Best wishes from SCBD,

Monique
